Applications Of Epimedium Extract

The most common applications of Epimedium extract in TCM are for male sexual function, such as low libido and erectile dysfunction. Icariin, a flavonol glycoside that is an 8-prenyl derivative of kaempferol 3,7-O-diglucoside, is one of its most important components. Icarin's primary biological effect is to inhibit the activity of the enzyme cGMP-phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), which has a major impact on the cardiovascular system.
Epimedium contains chemicals that may help improve sexual function and increase blood flow. It also contains phytoestrogens, which may have estrogen-like effects.
Epimedium is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), sexual problems, weak and brittle bones, postmenopausal health problems, and other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support any of these claims.
