Artemisinin, also known as sweet wormwood, sweet annie, sweet sagewort, annual mugwort or annual wormwood, is a common type of wormwood native to temperate Asia. For centuries it has been present in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a fever remedy. However, today it is mostly known for its antimalarial properties. Artemisinin, a compound which is extracted from Artemisia annua, was first extracted in the 1970s by Chinese scientist Tu Youyou, for which she shared the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Moreover, artemisinin is currently undergoing early research and testing for the treatment of cancer.
